Alsace bears the imprint of an eventful century, marked by world conflicts and several changes of nationality between France and Germany. These upheavals had a profound impact on the region’s inhabitants and landscapes. In Alsace Essentielle, a number of sites offer a better understanding of this complex history and its consequences.
Museums & exhibitions
Thematic museums are essential entry points for understanding the daily lives of inhabitants and soldiers during the wars. They display objects, documents, photographs and reconstructions that tell the story of combat, life at the front and civilian life disrupted by conflict.
Memory circuits
Remembrance trails offer an immersive approach to history. By walking on the sites of former battles or following the traces of historical events, you can better feel the impact of war on the territory and its inhabitants.
These itineraries enable visitors to discover the vestiges still visible today, from fortifications to buildings marked by conflict, and give a living context to the stories told in the museums.
In towns and villages, the Stolpersteinememorial paving stones installed in front of the former homes of victims of Nazism, punctuate certain routes reminding us of the individual fate of the conflicts.
Military cemeteries & necropolises
Cemeteries and necropolises are essential places of remembrance. They are a reminder of the human cost of war, and offer a place of remembrance and respect for those who lost their lives.
In 2023, 139 First World War funerary and memorial sites in Belgium and France were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. 10 are in Alsace, including 5 in Alsace Essentielle.
