Bergheim ramparts tour

Easy to reach and ideal for families, it takes just 40 minutes to tour Bergheim's historic ramparts. Today, it's one of the best examples of medieval city fortifications still visible in Alsace.
The tour shows a double enclosure consisting of two fortification walls separated by a moat, now occupied by gardens. A well-preserved counterscarp wall can be seen on the northeast side.
Originally, four gates protected the town towards the four cardinal points. Today, only the Upper Gate, located to the west, is still visible. The other three, the Untertor, Neutor and Leimentor, were demolished in the 19th century to ease traffic flow.
On your way, also discover nine flanking towers, one square tower and eight half-round towers, all still visible today.
A rare feature for a fortified town in Alsace, Bergheim had no fortified castle. This makes the walk all the more astonishing, as the ramparts alone give the impression of a real fortress.
