This climate is characterized by sharp contrasts <strong>, with cold winters and hot summers\u2026 sometimes very hot ones<\/strong>! So there are entire days when the temperature soars and the wind takes on the characteristics of a Foehn (which, incidentally, is the actual name for this phenomenon of warm winds blowing over mountainous terrain). On those days, the vineyards take on the feel of the \u201cpampas,\u201d and the village cobblestones store up the sun\u2019s heat until evening. <strong>The only sensible thing to do is seek out the cool<\/strong>. As a photographer who\u2019s been working in this region for several years, I\u2019ve learned to adapt to these periods: <strong>you don\u2019t fight the heat wave \u2014 you avoid it.<\/strong><\/span><b> You head down into a cellar. You slip beneath the ramparts. Visitors come here to taste white, red (Pinot Noir), and orange wines (Gew\u00fcrztraminer maceration wines)\u2014all straightforward and authentic\u2014as well as their delicious sparkling grape juice, perfectly balanced in sweetness (a personal favorite). Pierre explains their <strong>commitment to sustainability<\/strong> throughout every stage of production and the curiosity that led them to develop <strong>100% homemade cosmetics<\/strong>. Since 2018, it has also been a museum of urban art nestled within the old ramparts built by Vauban between 1698 and 1704. The <\/span><b>MAUSA Vauban<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> covers nearly 1,200 m\u00b2 within these very fortifications, where international artists (Seth, C215, Speedy Graphito, J\u00e9r\u00f4me Mesnager, to name a few) have come to paint directly on the walls, making use of the existing reliefs and textures.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are greeted by Laetitia, who explains the spirit of the place to us and invites us to keep our eyes open.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The tour concludes with the temporary exhibition, which is currently featuring the works of Tarek Benaoum, a Franco-Moroccan artist known for his fluid calligraphy\u2014a blend of writing and abstraction\u2014created during his artist-in-residence program in June 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The added bonus on a sweltering day comes from the architecture: the vaulted casemates naturally stay cool, and as you move from one room to the next, you\u2019re always in the shade and <strong>the temperature never exceeds 20\u00b0C<\/strong>. People come here with their families, but also for a simpler reason during heat waves: <strong>it\u2019s a wooded park where you can walk in the shade from one path to another<\/strong>, far from the asphalt and stone that trap heat elsewhere in the villages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The animal caretakers there offer daily demonstrations, such as <strong>feeding the otters<\/strong> (which we watched). Although they\u2019re not easy to photograph (they\u2019re particularly lively), they\u2019re still adorable, especially when they\u2019re enjoying the fish that the storks haven\u2019t stolen from them. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Which naturally brings us to the park\u2019s other photographic subject: the storks.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As summer begins, they teach their chicks to fly by making tiny flights just a few dozen centimeters above the nest (to show them how it\u2019s done). <strong>It\u2019s a touching spectacle that will delight wildlife and nature photography enthusiasts<\/strong>.
