The Alsace Wine Route

An emblematic itinerary of vineyards, villages and local delights

It needs no introduction: the emblematic Alsace Wine Road, which criss-crosses the vineyards over 170 kilometers from Marlenheim to Thann, is one of the region’s must-sees. You’ll appreciate its landscapes, its vineyards at the foot of the hills, its picturesque villages and, above all, its fine wines!

Stroll through the vineyards, pedal along the Véloroute du Vignoble, stroll through medieval villages with half-timbered houses, vibrate to the rhythm of a wine festival, chat with the locals, enjoy the coolness of the cellars in summer, discover the seven Alsatian grape varieties… There are a thousand and one ways to discover the Alsace Wine Route!

Grape varieties

In Alsace, wine is a sensory journey through the grape varieties. Seven main varieties shape the vineyard’s identity: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Each reveals a singular expression: freshness and finesse, aromatic intensity or gourmet roundness. This diversity allows us to explore a wide range of styles, from dry, chiselled wines to more generous batches, always in harmony with gastronomy.

And of course, for those who love bubbles, there’s the timeless Crémant d’Alsace (sparkling wine) : it’s no match for its Champagne cousin, thanks to its fruitiness and freshness!

Terroirs and Grands Crus

Alsace wines are also a singular terroir (and this is something you’ll sometimes find mentioned on the bottles). Soils, relief and exposure shape the character of each batch, offering infinite nuances for the same grape variety. This diversity is fully expressed by Alsace’s 51 Grands Crus, renowned for their singularity and their ability to reveal the full depth of a place.

Alsace Essentielle boasts 28 Grand Cru d’Alsace mentions! On the heights of Bergheim, at the foot of Schlossberg Castle in Kaysersberg or below Rouffach, these parcels offer exceptional wines and breathtaking landscapes.

The winegrowers

Behind every bottle, there’s a hand, an eye, a sensitivity. Alsace’s winegrowers cultivate their vines with the utmost care and passion, combining tradition with modern practices. From vineyard work to vinification, their choices give birth to sincere, lively wines that reflect both terroir and vision.

They open the doors of their wineries for you to discover their trade, their production and their know-how. Become a grape-picker for a day, combine food and wine or enjoy a blind tasting: the Wine Route is lived to the rhythm of its winemakers!
